About Mrs. Finlay

Hello! My name is Eva Finlay, and I have been teaching at Huntington Park Senior High School for the last six years! I have mostly taught ninth and tenth grade English classes with some English Language Development (ELD) classes in between.

Now, a little about me! I grew up in Hacienda Heights, CA and went to high school outside of LAUSD (so, teaching within it is a little interesting to compare to my own personal experience). After graduating high school, I attended ELAC for 3 years before transferring to UC Santa Cruz where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Literature. After I graduated from UCSC, I took a gap year in my educational pursuit where I worked for City Year Los Angeles at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex in the school of Academic Leadership Community. During this gap year, I served as a mentor, tutor, role model, and advocate for the students in ninth grade. Originally, my goal was to become a Community College professor after finishing my time with City Year, however, after my time in a high school classroom - I realized that if I wanted to teach college students, I should start with students in high school. This realization led me to beginning my teaching career with LAUSD at Huntington Park Senior High School. In May of 2022, I obtained my Masters Degree in Urban Education in Literacy from Loyola Marymount University.

Over my six years at HP, I have witnessed the growth of students beyond what they believe to be possible, as well as, my own personal growth both inside and outside of the classroom. My goal is to continue providing a quality education for students that pushes them to challenge themselves, consider the opinions or circumstances of others, and build a love of literacy within them.
